It’s not for everyone, but many enthusiasts are stepping off the treadmill and shunning the indoor track in cool support of local causes, in some cold or clever places. Here’s a host of winter runs to get your heart pumping all season.

Aon Step Up for Kids

Participants climb 80 floors (1,643 steps) to the top of the Aon Center, raising money for patients of Lurie Children’s Hospital and their families. Registration is available for full climb, half climb, or virtual participants at $30-$50/person. Children ages 12 and under are free. Each participant is committed to raising at least $150. Race capacity is 3,250 participants.

Super Shuffle 5k

The event is held annually on Super Bowl Sunday, and is followed by a Game Day Party including raffles, refreshments, and more. The Super Shuffle benefits the Geneva Park District Scholarship Fund. Registration is $34-$39.

Participants climb the stairs at Oakbrook Terrace Tower to raise money for the American Lung Association. Registration is available individually, as part of a team, or as a virtual climber. Events include a 31-floor climb (680 steps), extreme climb (62 floors/1,360 steps) or the ultimate climb (93 floors/2,040 steps). The power hour allows registrants to climb as many times as they can consecutively within an hour. Only 75 entries are available for this. The firefighter climb is for firefighters in full gear including boots, helmet, suit, and tank. Registration fee is $15-$45, and the fundraising minimum is $100.

Universal Sole Trail Challenge

The trail race is one of several sponsored by the Universal Sole, and designed to be a family-friendly event. The approximate distance is 4.5 miles. The post-race celebration will include beer and Will’s Famous Chili. Trail entry registration is $40.

The fundraiser 5/10K raises money for Back on My Feet, a national organization that combats homelessness. The race route travels to North and Belmont Harbor for the 5K and to the south end of Diversey Harbor for the 10th, returning then to Montrose Harbor.
